Takada Castle Site Park: Moats, Seasonal Scenery and a Rebuilt Turret

Cherry blossoms surround Takada Castle’s reconstructed three-storey turret at dusk, with the flowers and illuminated turret reflected in the moat, photographed in April 2015.

At Takada Castle Site Park, paths beside the outer moat offer a way to explore a former castle site through its landscape. Consider a waterside walk as the heart of your visit, with the reconstructed three-storey turret adding exhibits and a viewing room.

Why visit

The roughly 50-hectare park occupies the site of Matsudaira Tadateru’s castle, bringing together moat-side paths, lawns, cultural facilities and the reconstructed Gokuraku Bridge. Its appeal is not just a single building: try exploring the relationship between the water, open grounds and reconstructed features.

The turret was rebuilt in 1993, rather than surviving as an original castle keep. Exhibits occupy the first and second floors, while the third floor is a viewing room—a reason to add the building if castle history interests you.

What to expect

Consider making the outer moat your focus if seasonal scenery is the main attraction. The park is known for spring cherry blossoms and summer lotus flowers around the moat. Treat these as seasonal possibilities rather than a promise for a particular visit: blooming and festival dates vary, and photographs from those seasons do not show current conditions.

Planning notes

The park is free to enter, so a grounds-focused visit is a distinct option from visiting its paid facilities. Admission to the turret and other cultural facilities is separate.

Information checked on 2026-10-07 lists no regular closing day for the park; individual buildings follow separate schedules.

The turret opens 09:00–17:00 from April to November and 10:00–16:00 from December to March. Ticket sales end 30 minutes before closing. It closes on Mondays, or the next day if Monday is a holiday; the day after a public holiday; 29 December–3 January; and Monday–Thursday in January and February except holidays. Cherry-blossom festival and Golden Week exceptions apply, and temporary closures are possible. Check the official schedule for your intended date.

Individual turret admission is 310 yen for adults and 160 yen for high-school students and elementary/junior-high students living outside Joetsu. Local student and other exemptions have separate eligibility rules; consult the official information before relying on an exemption.

The address is 44-1 Honjocho, Joetsu. The tourism office gives about 15 minutes on foot from Takada Station. If arriving at Joetsumyoko Station, change to the Myoko Haneuma Line for Takada; check your train connections and return journey separately.
