Kashiwazaki City Museum: Nature and Local History

Entrance facade of Kashiwazaki City Museum

Meet the region through Naumann elephant excavation material, wildlife displays and the changing story of Kashiwazaki’s Enma market. Kashiwazaki City Museum brings natural history and local life together, offering two different ways to explore what has shaped the area.

Why visit

The appeal is the combination of landscape, animals and human history. The nature gallery introduces regional landforms and wildlife through specimens, models and audiovisual displays, with Naumann elephant excavation material and a skeleton display among its highlights. The history and archaeology galleries take a different approach: they trace Kashiwazaki from modern and early-modern life back through the medieval period to Jomon archaeology.

Plan your visit

Choose the permanent galleries if nature and local history are your main interests. Under the official fee schedule updated 1 April 2026, admission is 420 yen for adults and high-school students, and free for elementary-school, junior-high and preschool children.

The optional planetarium-plus-permanent-galleries ticket costs 640 yen for adults and high-school students, 190 yen for elementary-school and junior-high students, and is free for preschool children. Treat this as a separate choice rather than the ordinary gallery admission.

Make the most of your visit

Try using two subjects as anchors: the Naumann elephant material for the region’s natural past, and the changing Enma market tradition for its social history. In the nature gallery, compare the specimens with the models and audiovisual explanations. In the history galleries, follow the backward-looking progression from more recent life toward Jomon archaeology, rather than treating the displays as isolated objects.

Planning notes

Official visitor information checked on 20 October 2026 lists opening hours of 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. The museum closes on Mondays; when Monday is a holiday, the closure moves to the first non-holiday afterward. It also closes from 29 December to 3 January.

Tickets are sold for the day only and payment is cash only; credit cards and electronic money are not accepted. There is no advance reservation sale. Special exhibitions are priced separately.

The address is 8-35 Midoricho, Kashiwazaki, Niigata. If you want to include the planetarium, check its programmes and screening times separately: a standard museum visit does not guarantee a screening.
