NEXT STOP: NIIGATA · AREA GUIDE
At a glance
Why go?
Mountain scenery, onsen and Niigata sake, with a station-centred starting point.
Recommended duration
Allow one local day for a focused visit, or one night when you want to combine an onsen stay with mountain activities.
Travel Ease
Direct rail to Echigo-Yuzawa Station; local transport connects the wider mountain and resort area.
Why go?
Echigo-Yuzawa is a mountain town where snow, hot springs and sake shape the visit. Start near the station for a compact introduction, or choose a mountain activity and give it room in your plan.
How long to stay
A day suits a station-based visit; one night gives an onsen evening and more time in the mountains. Our Tokyo return models take just under six hours for a rice-ball lunch or tasting, or about eight hours with a bath.
Where to stay
Echigo-Yuzawa Station and the onsen town: start here for a rail-based break that mixes food, hot springs and a mountain outing. Choose the hotel by its actual walking route or offered transfer, not the town name alone.
Near your chosen ski resort: a better fit when most of the stay is about the slopes. The official lodging guide separates areas such as Naeba, Kagura–Mitsumata and Iwappara; these are not all beside Echigo-Yuzawa Station.
For an onsen evening, compare a room-only plan with dinner and breakfast included, and match any dinner arrival time to your train. Browse official Yuzawa accommodation by area (Japanese). Still choosing a base? Compare Niigata City, Echigo-Yuzawa and Sado.
Experiences to build around
Sake and local flavours
Ponshukan gives visitors aged 20 and over a station-based introduction to Niigata sake. The food counters and market make a good stop for a wider group.
Snow, onsen and green mountains
Build your visit around a snowy winter day, a warm bath or time in the green mountains. Choose one main activity and leave room to enjoy it.

Trips from your starting point
Choose a station-centred visit for a short escape, or allow a longer stay for resorts and mountain activities.
Plan your visit
Compare our half-day sake itinerary with the sake-bath day trip. Both models include direct trains, the main visit and time to return to Tokyo Station.
For a food-focused half-day or a combined bath-and-sake visit, compare all station-based courses in Find My Next Stop. Choose Food for the rice-ball lunch, Sake for tasting, or Onsen for a bath.
Access and Travel Ease
Take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa Station. The model courses use a 77-minute direct train from Tokyo. Ponshukan is inside the station complex; mountain and resort visits need additional local travel.

Best season for your visit
Winter draws snow lovers, the green season opens up a different mountain landscape, and autumn brings foliage. Ponshukan offers an indoor option for a station-based visit.
Want a snow day?
Choose Echigo-Yuzawa when skiing or snowboarding is the reason for your trip. GALA Yuzawa has its own Shinkansen station during the winter season; Naeba and Kagura involve an onward bus from Echigo-Yuzawa. Set aside a full day for one resort, or stay overnight to combine the slopes with an onsen evening.
For winter 2026–27, GALA has announced that its South Area and the connecting ropeway to Yuzawa Kogen will be closed. The operator plans to welcome skiers in the Central and North areas, with a shuttle bus for the Yuzawa Kogen connection. See GALA’s season notice and current resort information.
Our Ponshukan courses cover a rice-ball lunch, sake tasting or a bath inside Echigo-Yuzawa Station. For a snow visit, choose a resort day; its transport, equipment and time on the mountain need their own space in the plan.

Practical notes
Ponshukan’s tasting room does not admit accompanying children. For a family or mixed group, build the visit around food, shopping or another shared activity.
