Historic Sado Gold Mine: Inside Sado’s Mining Heritage

Step underground at Sado Kinzan and the island’s gold-mining story becomes a place you can walk through. Hand-dug passages, scenes of Edo-period work and the machinery of a later age sit beneath the mountain. Above them, the split peak of Dōyū-no-Warito gives the landscape its unmistakable outline.

The mine is a rewarding anchor for a stay in Aikawa. Give it a proper place in your island itinerary, with time to explore the surrounding mining town after the tunnels.

Two tunnels, two eras

The standard Sado Gold Mine Course brings together the Sōdayū and Dōyū tunnels. Sōdayū introduces mining by hand in the Edo period, with recreated scenes of workers cutting rock and moving water. Dōyū shows the move to mechanised mining, with surviving industrial equipment and views towards Dōyū-no-Warito.

The World Heritage connection

Sado Island Gold Mines was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2024. Its three component parts span the Nishimikawa and Aikawa-Tsurushi mining areas and show the development of unmechanised mining. This visitor facility opens part of the Aikawa mine; the wider World Heritage property extends beyond a single attraction.

Planning notes

Information as of 29 September 2026.

Visit and admission: allow 60–90 minutes for the standard self-guided course. The operator lists ¥1,500 for adults and junior-high-school students, and ¥750 for elementary-school children. Advance booking is not required for this course. Guided tours and other experiences have separate conditions. See the official course and price guide.

Tunnel entry: April–October, 08:00–16:00, with closing at 17:30; November–March, 08:30–15:30, with closing at 17:00. Last admission is earlier than closing. The announced maintenance closure is 2–3 December 2026 for the standard course and ISLAND MIRRORGE.

Comfort and access: the tunnels are around 10°C, so bring an extra layer. Sōdayū has many steps and is not wheelchair-accessible. Wheelchair visitors can use part of Dōyū, returning before its final stairs; ask staff about the turning point. Narrow, dim passages are part of the visit.

Shop and museum: since April 2026 these have operated separately in the Aikawa Skills Tradition Exhibition Hall in Kitazawa. Their hours differ from tunnel entry times. Check the operator’s shop and museum information for your visit.

Getting there from Ryotsu

Sado has no railway. The mine’s access guide gives roughly 30 km or one hour by car from Ryotsu Port. Public transport uses buses towards Aikawa and Sado Kinzan; some journeys require a change. Build the visit around the current island bus timetable and your Sado Kisen sailing, including waiting and boarding time.

Make Aikawa part of your stay

For a less hurried visit, we suggest staying on Sado and giving Aikawa its own stretch of the trip. A base in Aikawa keeps your focus on the mining area, while Ryotsu puts you closer to the main ferry gateway. Choose the base that suits the rest of your island route, then leave room for a meal and a walk instead of filling every gap with another transfer.

Our Sado Island guide compares bases and explains travel without a car. For mainland alternatives, compare Niigata’s areas or use the travel planning guide.
