Why visit
The bridge is both a working city crossing and a landmark worth slowing down for. Its six reinforced-concrete arches are faced with granite, giving the 306.9-metre structure a strong, elegant profile over the river.
Completed in 1929, the present bridge is the third to stand here. It was designated a national Important Cultural Property on 6 July 2004.
What to expect
A walk across the pedestrian pavement lets you enjoy the river and the bridge’s granite details at close range. A riverside viewpoint offers a different perspective, with the repeated arches visible together. Combining those two views is a simple way to turn a crossing into a small architecture walk.
Planning notes
The bridge carries regular road traffic: use the pedestrian pavements and choose safe places to pause. Plan your riverside walk around the weather and any local path restrictions. The featured photograph records a view from 2013.
Getting there
The bridge is in Bandai 2, Chuo Ward, Niigata City, about 15 minutes on foot from Niigata Station. This is an approach-time estimate; allow additional time for the crossing and any riverbank stops.
