Step into Niigata’s merchant-house history at the Former Ozawa Residence, where a shop and home preserve the form of a traditional town house. Domestic rooms, storehouses and a Japanese garden offer different ways to look at the household and how it developed over time.

Why visit
The appeal is the connection between commerce and everyday life: this was the Ozawa family’s merchant shop as well as its residence. Seven buildings and the grounds are designated municipal cultural property, making the property more than a single historic façade. Consider it for a closer look at the spaces that supported a merchant household.
Plan your visit
Individual admission is ¥260 for adults and ¥130 for elementary and junior-high pupils. Those pupils enter free on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays; separate group rates apply.
The address is 2733 Kami-Okawamae-dori 12-bancho. Published approaches from the stops are one minute from Kyu-Ozawake Jutaku Iriguchi or three minutes from Higashiboridori 12-bancho. Use these stop names when checking your journey.
Make the most of your visit
Try looking for contrasts rather than treating the property as one uniform historic house. The domestic rooms and storehouses offer different perspectives on the household, while the garden combines traditional stone arrangements with a lawn. Consider how these elements express the residence’s later development as well as its merchant origins.
