Aore Nagaoka: Kengo Kuma Architecture by the Station

Timber chequerboard walls and the broad glass-and-steel roof frame Aore Nagaoka's Nakadoma plaza.

A broad roof over the Nakadoma plaza and chequered timber surfaces make Aore Nagaoka an engaging architecture stop near the station. Kengo Kuma’s design brings city hall, an arena and public exchange space into one civic setting.

Why visit

The Nakadoma is a good place to begin. Look up at its broad roof, then follow the chequered timber surfaces across the surrounding buildings. The plaza gives this working civic complex a shared space where architecture and the city’s everyday life meet.

Plan your visit

Aore Nagaoka is at 1-4-10 Otedori, close to Nagaoka Station. The official access page gives a walking estimate of about three minutes; allow extra time for the current approach via ground level. It is a convenient place to consider when you have time around the station.

Make the most of your visit

Step back to take in the roof and the arrangement of the buildings, then look more closely at the timber pattern. A plaza and exterior visit lets you appreciate the design; events, arena entry and reserved rooms have separate conditions.

Planning notes

The official facility information lists 08:00–22:00, checked on 18 October 2026. City-office counter hours are separate; these facility hours do not establish access to every public space, event or reserved room.

The direct passage into Aore's third floor is closed from 4 August 2026 to 31 March 2028, as currently planned, because of adjacent-building work. From Ote Sky Deck, use the stairs or lifts down to ground level; do not count on an uninterrupted covered route. This notice was checked on 18 October 2026. Car parking is separately managed and charged separately from your visit.
