Enkikan: Historic Rooms and Cherry Blossoms in Hakusan Park

Cherry blossoms beside the wooden Enkikan building in Hakusan Park

General sightseeing at Enkikan is suspended from September 29 through December 1, 2026 because of a whole-building private booking. Dates may change; check the operator’s latest notice before planning a visit.

Enkikan brings part of a historic Niigata merchant-family residence into the setting of Hakusan Park. Its relocated rooms and garden suikinkutsu, a buried pot designed to resonate with dripping water, offer two distinctive reasons to consider it for a future visit.

Why visit

The appeal is the connection between domestic history and garden design. Enkikan incorporates part of a merchant-family home rather than simply presenting a modern exhibition about one. Consider the rooms and the suikinkutsu as complementary points of interest: one preserves part of a residence, while the other uses dripping water to create resonance.

Plan your visit

Enkikan is inside Hakusan Park at 1-2 Ichibanboridoricho, Chuo Ward, Niigata City. The city estimates a 20-minute walk from Hakusan Station and about three minutes from the Shiyakushomae bus stop. Use these as walking estimates, not guaranteed connection times.

Make the most of your visit

When general viewing is operating, distinguish ordinary viewing from paid services. Rooms not hired out are normally free to view; tea service costs JPY 600 from 2026-04-01. Tea and room hire are optional, separate purchases, so neither should be treated as an admission charge. Try making the historic rooms the focus rather than assuming a paid service is part of the visit.

The operator asks visitors to wear socks inside to protect the historic floors.

Planning notes

The published general-viewing hours are 09:00–17:00, distinct from room-hire hours. Regular closures are the first and third Mondays, moving to the following day when those Mondays are public holidays, and 29 December–3 January.

Facility hire and organised group visits require an application through Enkikan. General visitors cannot enter rooms being hired out.
