Why visit

The appeal is the combination of a wooded mountainside and a main hall with its own distinct history. Kokujouji is traditionally dated to 709, while the present main hall was completed in 1718: the founding tradition should not be mistaken for the age of the surviving building. Its setting inside Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park gives the temple visit a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Plan your visit

The temple address is 1407 Kugami, Tsubame. For access, the temple recommends rental cars near Tsubame-Sanjo Station or taxis from Yoshida or Yahiko stations, with taxi journeys estimated at around 30 minutes. Treat that as an operator estimate, not a confirmed round-trip rail connection.

If driving, make the Visitor Service Center your parking destination. Its parking area accommodates about 40–50 ordinary cars.

Make the most of your visit

Try making the main hall approach the focus rather than treating the temple as a stop to rush through. Take time to notice how the building sits within the wooded slope, and keep your pace considerate of its role as an active place of worship. The contrast between the temple’s early founding tradition and its eighteenth-century main hall is a useful way to understand what you are seeing.
