A sake stop, with room for a little more

A tasting visit works on its own; you do not need to include the bath. We suggest allowing around 45–60 minutes for tasting and browsing, with extra time for queues, food or shopping. For a bath as well, allow roughly another hour for reception, changing and bathing. These are our planning allowances.

Choose your detour: sake tasting; sake tasting plus food and shopping; or a longer stop that adds the sake bath. Each experience has its own opening hours, and the bath is charged separately.

Start with Niigata sake

The tasting room brings together sake from breweries across Niigata. Pick a few labels that catch your attention and compare their flavours. It is an easy introduction to the prefecture’s sake culture, whether you already have a favourite style or are still finding one.

The operator lists ¥1,000 for a loan tasting cup and five coins. The coins are used at the tasting machines; the number of pours depends on the sake you choose.

The tasting room is for guests aged 20 and over. Guests under 20 and parties accompanied by children cannot enter the tasting room. The market and food counters offer other ways to enjoy Ponshukan.

Optional extra: a sake bath

Want a longer break? Ponshukan also has a hot-spring bath enriched with sake made for bathing. Add it if a soak appeals to you, or enjoy the tasting room without it. If you choose both experiences, plan the bath before your sake tasting.

Bath admission is ¥950 for junior-high-school age and older, including bathing tax. A rental bath-towel and face-towel set costs ¥200 extra, so admission with rental towels is ¥1,150. This is separate from the sake-tasting fee.

Elementary-school children pay ¥400; younger children enter free. Separate men’s and women’s baths apply from elementary-school age. Large lockers use a refundable ¥100 coin.

Food and shopping in the same stop

Leave a little time for the market if you can. The station complex also offers rice balls at Bakudan Onigiri, koji sweets and regional food products. Food and shopping are optional additions, with separate charges and counter hours.
