Explore the former Ito family residence and its garden at the Northern Culture Museum in Soumi, Niigata. The house, collections and garden make this a visit centred on a historic home rather than a gallery alone.

Why visit
The former Ito residence gives this museum a distinctive setting, with the building, collections and garden forming one visit. The photographs show a tatami hall opening towards the garden, and a wooden veranda framing the pond, rocks and trees. Where access permits, take time to notice how the house and garden relate to each other.

Plan your visit
Head to the main museum at 2-15-25 Soumi, Konan Ward, Niigata City—not the city-centre Niigata Branch. The museum estimates about one hour for viewing; treat that as viewing time, not a complete transport allowance. Bus services are infrequent, so establish your outward and return connections before travelling.
Make the most of your visit
Consider the free staff introduction, lasting about 15 minutes. Reservations receive priority; it may be unavailable when busy or fully booked, and groups may be combined. Confirm English-language availability directly if essential.
Luggage storage is listed in lockers or at the office, alongside indoor and outdoor wheelchairs for loan. Discuss personal access requirements beforehand: these services do not establish a fully step-free route or guaranteed availability.
Planning notes
Information was checked on 2 October 2026. Standard hours are 09:00–17:00 April–November and 09:00–16:30 December–March. Normally closed Tuesdays, with closure moving to the following day for a Tuesday public holiday; April, May, October and November have no regular Tuesday closure. Closed 1–2 January; dated notices can override this pattern.
For 2026-10-01 through 2026-10-31, opening is daily, 09:00–17:00. Events use the kitchen on 8 October and the large reception hall and kitchen on 19 and 29 October, potentially affecting viewing. Individual car visitors should use front-gate parking and the admission desk. A separate notice dated 2026-08-22 reports earthen-wall work in the large reception hall, with no completion date. Ask about current restrictions; neither notice confirms unrestricted viewing or completion.
Through 2027-03-31, standard admission is JPY 800 for adults and JPY 400 for elementary and junior-high pupils. Below-school-age children enter free; those pupils enter free on Sundays and Japanese public holidays. From 2027-04-01, adult individual admission becomes JPY 900 including tax. Foreign individual visitors, including Japan residents, pay the adult individual rate; the separately announced inbound-group category is not a blanket foreign-visitor rate.
Flowers and foliage are not guaranteed on a particular date. Bus timetables, fares, boarding points and return connections remain unverified; Japanese and English taxi estimates differ, so no taxi duration is assured. The guide information establishes no universal admission-booking rule.
