Niigata City Art Museum: Modern Art and Mayekawa Architecture

The low, dark-brick Niigata City Art Museum stands behind leafy trees, beside a paved approach and steps.

Niigata City Art Museum brings together modern art and architecture in a detour that can begin with the building itself. Opened in 1985 and designed by Kunio Mayekawa, it offers a choice between collection displays and temporary exhibitions—so start by deciding which kind of art visit you want.

Why visit

The collection focuses on Japanese modern and contemporary art connected with Niigata, alongside Western modern art. That gives the museum a local perspective without limiting its scope to local artists. Architecture adds another reason to come: Mayekawa also designed the park opposite. Consider giving the building some attention before heading into the galleries.

Plan your visit

For a collection-only visit, individual admission is ¥260 for adults, ¥190 for university and high-school students, and ¥130 for elementary and junior-high pupils. Temporary exhibitions have different prices; a museum-organised temporary-exhibition ticket includes the collection without a second collection fee.

The museum is at 5191-9 Nishiohata-cho. The operator describes an approach of five minutes from Nishiboridori 8 and twelve minutes from Furumachi bus stop. Use those as local approach information, not as a complete bus journey plan.

Make the most of your visit

Try using the Niigata connection as a thread through the collection, then contrast it with the museum’s Western modern-art focus. Collection displays and temporary exhibitions are distinct visits and ticket categories: choose the collection for this approach, or consider a temporary exhibition if its subject is your main interest.

Planning notes

The official visitor guide, checked on 13 October 2026, gives normal hours of 09:30–17:00, with ticket sales ending at 16:30. Elementary and junior-high pupils receive free collection admission on weekends and public holidays.

Collection Exhibition 2, My Family and I, is scheduled for 8 August–13 December 2026. Its schedule closes Mondays except 12 October and 23 November, with additional closures including 13 October and 24 November. The remaining October closed Mondays are 19 and 26 October. General closures also include exhibition changeovers and year-end holidays; the usual Monday closure has public- or observed-holiday exceptions. Check the programme for your specific date.
