Step into Niigata’s snow-country story through a reconstructed Takada shopping street, then explore the region’s rice cultivation and Jomon life. Niigata Prefectural Museum of History brings these themes together in its permanent galleries, making them a natural focus for a visit.

Why visit
The appeal is the connection between everyday life and the region’s deeper past. The permanent galleries introduce Niigata history through life with heavy snow, rice cultivation, Jomon life and archaeological research. The reconstructed Takada street gives the snow-life theme a concrete setting: look for the ganki, or covered walkways, in the indoor shopping-street reconstruction.
Plan your visit
For the permanent exhibition, admission is ¥520 for adults and ¥200 for high-school and university students; junior-high-school age and younger enter free. Special exhibitions have separate prices, but a special-exhibition ticket also admits you to the permanent galleries, so consider which exhibitions you want before choosing your ticket.
The museum is at 1-2247-2 Sekiharamachi, Nagaoka. It lists ordinary-car parking and access from Nagaoka Station by Echigo Kotsu bus.
Make the most of your visit
Try using the snow-life reconstruction as a starting point for comparing the galleries’ different views of life in Niigata, from rice cultivation to Jomon archaeology. Free permanent-gallery audio guides are listed in Japanese, English, Chinese, Russian and Korean. Ask at reception about audio-guide availability.
Planning notes
The museum’s official visitor information, checked on 18 October 2026, lists opening hours of 09:30–17:00, with admission tickets sold until 16:30. It closes on Mondays; when Monday is a holiday, the closure moves to the first subsequent non-holiday. It also closes from 28 December to 3 January, and temporary opening or closure notices may apply.
The bus timetable displayed in the access information is marked April 2023. Check current Echigo Kotsu services before travelling rather than relying on that table as a confirmed 2026 connection.
