A rounded Shinkansen nose, a black steam locomotive and the story of a town shaped by railways: Niitsu Railway Museum brings a different side of Niigata into view. Come for the full-size trains, then head indoors to explore the people, tools and technology behind them.
Shinkansen and steam, side by side
The outdoor collection is the big attraction. It includes leading cars from the 200-series and E4-series Shinkansen, C57 steam locomotive No. 19, a 485-series leading car, a DD14 snow-clearing locomotive and a 115-series train. For a first visit, start with the contrast between the Shinkansen and the steam engine, then take a closer look at the less familiar vehicles.

Discover the railway town behind the trains
Indoors, the focus shifts to Niitsu’s railway-town history and the links between railways and everyday life in Niigata. Old ticket machines, uniforms and displays about railway technology give the visit a human scale. Pairing these collections with the large outdoor vehicles makes for a more rounded visit than stopping at the Shinkansen alone.

Getting to the main museum
