Ponshukan Niigata Station: A Tasting Introduction to Local Sake

The warmly lit entrance and displays of Ponshukan’s main store in the Mets building at Niigata Station.

Rows of sake dispensers make Ponshukan at Niigata Station an inviting place to compare Niigata sake. Try representative brewery labels and changing seasonal selections, then consider browsing the main store’s regional rice, sweets and seasonings.

Why visit

The appeal is comparison: rather than committing to a bottle, you can explore different sake selections through the tasting dispensers. Try comparing your impressions from one pour to the next to discover what you prefer. The shop adds a separate way to explore regional products, without making a purchase part of the tasting experience.

Plan your visit

Head to the main store in the CoCoLo Niigata Mets Building, at 1-96-47 Hanazono, Chuo-ku, Niigata, at Niigata Station. Use that building and address as your destination rather than relying on the Ponshukan name alone.

For the tasting, ¥1,000 provides a loaned tasting cup and five sake coins, allowing up to five cupfuls. Treat this as the tasting outlay, not a shopping budget: additional purchases are separate.

Make the most of your visit

Consider choosing your pours one at a time rather than deciding on all five in advance. Do not assume that every label takes one coin; let the coin requirement guide how you use your allocation. Seasonal selections and product availability vary, so approach the visit as a chance to discover what is offered rather than to secure a particular label. Shopping remains optional.

Planning notes

Official main-store information checked on 16 October 2026 lists the shop’s hours as 09:00–21:00 and the tasting room’s as 09:30–20:30, with last admission at 20:15.
