Tenjuen Garden: Chinese Landscapes and a Japanese Pond Garden

Chinese-style pavilions and a pond in Tenjuen Garden

Tenjuen brings two garden traditions into one visit: a Chinese garden created by specialists from Beijing and a Japanese pond-and-waterfall garden designed by Kinsaku Nakane. Come for the contrast in landscape design, with Togo Murano’s lotus-inspired meditation building adding a distinctive architectural focus.

Why visit

The appeal is in the different approaches to creating a garden. Tenjuen’s Chinese garden was both designed and built by specialists from Beijing, using materials brought from China. The Japanese garden offers another focus: Kinsaku Nakane’s composition of a pond and waterfall. Consider looking at how each design directs your attention rather than treating the grounds simply as a backdrop for photographs.

Plan your visit

Garden admission is free, so an ordinary visit needs no admission-fee allowance. Optional room-hire charges are separate and are not part of a garden visit.

The address is 633-8 Seigoro, Chuo Ward, Niigata. Tenjuen is about three minutes on foot from Tenjuen-mae bus stop. For drivers, the operator lists free parking for 70 cars inside and 30 outside.

Make the most of your visit

Give the architecture its own moment of attention. Togo Murano designed the lotus-inspired meditation building; try considering the flower reference as you look at its form. This provides a different way to engage with Tenjuen beyond comparing its garden landscapes, without making an interior visit part of your plan.

Planning notes

The official website’s garden hours, checked on 20 October 2026, are 09:00–17:00, extending to 09:00–21:00 in July and August. Room-hire hours are separate and should not be used to plan garden access.

Tenjuen closes on the second and fourth Mondays, or the following day when that Monday is a public holiday. It also closes from December 29 through January 3. Check your intended date against these exceptions before setting out.
